Dental Radiation is Minimal
It’s hard to believe, but a dental radiograph actually exposes you to less radiation than what you get every day just from environmental exposure! If you fly on a plane, you are exposed to much more radiation than a series of checkup x-rays. Also, it is important to note that digital x-rays, which are always used at Essenmacher Family Dental, give much less radiation than the traditional film x-rays, and tens to hundreds of times less than a chest x-ray, mammogram or CT scan. We also always utilize a lead apron with a thyroid collar to help minimize the exposure even further.
At Essenmacher Family Dental, we have many satisfied patients who have undergone the All-on-4 procedure. And as dental professionals, we have been very impressed with All-on-4.
However, this is a complex undertaking—not for the patient but for the dentist—meant to provide a brand-new smile. We don’t recommend seeking out just any dentist.
The skilled cosmetic dentist in our Albuquerque, NM dental office does stunning work!
All-on-4 requires four strategically placed titanium posts across your jaw. These posts are strong enough to support an affixed denture.
With All-on-4, you will no longer have to worry about dentures slipping or coming into our dental office for realigns. There is simply no better denture technology around.
In addition, our dentist makes sure your restoration teeth look natural. No one will even know you have All-on-4!
The process starts with a comprehensive assessment in our dental office. It is during this assessment that our top dentist determines whether you’re a good candidate for All-on-4. This is also a great time to ask any questions that you may have about this innovative denture-meets-implant technology.

We Offer Options That Work for You
At Essenmacher Family Dental we have several different options to replace missing teeth. Often the most desired option is a dental implant. An oral surgeon or periodontist places the post of the implant below the gum line. After healing has occurred and the implant has stabilized in the bone, Dr. Essenmacher will take an impression (mold), and a local, highly skilled dental lab technician will custom create a tooth that fits perfectly in the missing tooth’s place.
Bridges
Another option to replace a missing tooth is a bridge. A bridge can be used if the missing tooth is in between two existing teeth. The existing teeth would have crowns placed on them and they would be attached to the replacement tooth in the middle. Both implants and bridges are cemented into place, so they do not come in and out and are very natural-looking replacements for missing teeth.
Partial and Complete Dentures
A partial denture can also be used, and is a reasonable option especially when multiple teeth are missing on one arch. A partial denture is a removable appliance that can have a metal or acrylic base. Acrylic teeth are then placed on the base to replace missing teeth. It is held in by clasps that surround the remaining teeth.
If all the teeth are missing, a traditional denture can be used, or we can fabricate a prosthesis that is supported by implants for better retention.
Dr. Essenmacher would be happy to sit down with you and discuss all your options, so we can find the solution that best meets your needs.
All of us experience bad breath at one time or another. Even if we have a great oral hygiene routine and brush and floss after every meal, this happens sometimes. However, our top Albuquerque dentist recommends coming in for an oral health assessment if bad breath persists.
Common Culprits of Bad Breath May Include:
- Dental infections
- Periodontal disease
- Dry mouth
Less serious issues that cause bad breath include eating certain foods and spices—garlic, for example.
Occasionally, bad breath needs to be addressed by your general practitioner to rule out underlying conditions like acid reflux. However, a thorough dental exam is a great place to start if you’re feeling otherwise healthy.
Our Northeast Heights area dentist can take x-rays to rule out infections. Additionally, our hygienist can provide a thorough professional cleaning to rid your teeth and gums of the stubborn bacteria that leads to bad breath.
At Essenmacher Family Dental, we recommend dental cleanings and exams at least every six months. This helps prevent bad breath and more serious oral health issues like periodontal disease and dental emergencies.
Get in Touch with Our Dental Office Today
If you have persistent bad breath or other oral health changes, don’t wait to contact our Albuquerque dental office. Bad breath is not only embarrassing; it can also signify an underlying dental or health issue.
Infection and Inflammation
Bleeding gums is often a sign of infection and inflammation in the mouth. A number of factors can play a role in causing bleeding, but it most often occurs when bacteria-filled plaque builds up around the gum line. Bleeding gums is not normal, and can be a sign of gingivitis, or a more serious form of bone disease, periodontitis.
Periodontitis is the most common cause for tooth loss among adults because the infection causes destruction of the bone that surrounds the teeth, and they become loose. Good daily hygiene habits such as brushing and flossing can reduce plaque buildup, but having an oral hygiene prophylaxis (cleaning) and exam regularly will reduce your risk for further issues. So if your gums bleed, don’t ignore it! Make an appointment with our team at Essenmacher Family Dental for a comprehensive exam.
Crowns Can Be Needed for Many Reasons
There are a few different reasons that a person could need a crown on their tooth. The most common reason is that the tooth has a cavity and/or existing filling that is so large that the tooth is prone to breaking without a protective cap. Another reason that a tooth may need a crown is that the tooth has a crack in it. A crack can be caused by trauma to the tooth, such as getting hit by something or biting down on something very hard. Other times, a tooth becomes cracked when a person has bite issues or a grinding or clenching habit. A crown is needed on these teeth to hold the tooth structure together and prevent it from cracking any further. If you feel that your tooth may need a crown, please call our office, Essenmacher Family Dental, at 505-881-0334. We would be happy to set up an appointment to evaluate your needs.
Remove Bacteria and Plaque
A soft bristled, electric or manual, toothbrush is effective at removing bacteria and plaque from the tooth and gum surface without causing harm to these tissues. Hard and medium bristled toothbrushes can be abrasive and cause damage by removing or traumatizing gum tissues, the outer layer of enamel, and root surfaces. The size of the toothbrush head is also important. For the average size mouth, an inch tall and 1/2 inch wide is most appropriate. Also, looking for brushes with the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Approval can help with selection.
Children's Dentistry
We all know that brushing twice daily and flossing at least once per day are keys to good oral health; however, anyone with children will tell you it can be a struggle to get kids to brush their teeth properly. Often, kids will just do a quick once-over, which is not enough to remove bacteria and the acids that cause decay. We have even heard stories of kids wetting their toothbrushes to be sneaky without brushing at all.
Your children’s dentist in Albuquerque, Dr. Lindsay Essenmacher, has a few suggestions to make life easier for parents.
Brush Together for Fun
With busy schedules, parents often wish they could spend more time with their kids. Set good habits by brushing together. YouTube and other video websites have catchy videos that encourage brushing for a full two minutes. You and your little one can enjoy a teeth cleaning dance party together.
Be Sure to Help Little Ones
Kids will need assistance brushing their teeth until their motor skills develop enough to do it on their own – usually around age eight.
Keep a Chart and Give Prizes
Kids love prizes. When your child does a good job brushing his or her teeth, give a reward at the end of each week. To protect the teeth, make sure it is something other than candy or sugar.
For more advice from an experienced children’s dentist, contact our Albuquerque dental office to arrange an appointment.
At Essenmacher Family Dental, we believe that a family dentist who is also a children’s dentist is better for the whole family; this includes children.
When your child sees the same dentist that you see, it instills confidence and may make your child feel more grown up.
Benefits of Taking Your Child to the Dentist:
- The dentist has more experience treating across age groups, which means your child can keep his or her dentist into adulthood
- A family dentist understands the unique dental traits that run in your family, which means that the dentist will know what to look for in your child’s oral health
- All your family’s dental records are kept in one location

Dental Care for the Whole Family
We are often asked by our patients if it is a good idea to bring their young children along to their dental appointments. Here at Essenmacher Family Dental, we always encourage making visits to our dental office an activity for the entire family!
Unfortunately, many adults have a fear of the dentist. It is our philosophy that teaching children about what happens at the dentist and making regular visits to the dentist’s office beginning at a young age can greatly reduce potential fears that may develop as they grow older.
Your Comfort is Our Priority
We want every member of your family to be a happy, comfortable patient when they visit our Albuquerque, NM office. We encourage parents to bring their children if they have an appointment scheduled with us so that we can use those appointments as teaching moments. While you and your children are at our office, we can explain what happens in the dental chair and demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques. Such visits also give your children opportunities to ask questions or take a closer look at the dental equipment to help reduce the fear of the unknown.
Children’s Dental Health is a Precursor for Adult’s Dental Health
Baby teeth are extremely important because research shows that a high number of cavities in baby teeth tends to correlate with a high number of cavities that form in the adult teeth.
Good oral hygiene and proper nutrition are important for preventing cavities even in primary teeth. Brushing with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and regular dental cleanings all play a part in keeping cavities at bay. Children will need help brushing and flossing until around the age of eight when their dexterity improves.
The baby teeth are also important for holding the spaces for the permanent teeth. They act as guides for permanent teeth as they grow in. Removing teeth too early or losing them to trauma and decay causes problems with long-term growth patterns. If baby teeth are lost too early, it can cause the permanent teeth to be more crowded or misaligned.
We Work With You for Well-Rounded Dental Care
At Essenmacher Family Dental, we work with our patients from all angles – prevention, detection, early diagnosis, patient education, and restorative treatment to keep teeth healthy so that your child can experience exceptional oral health for a lifetime.

Veneers Are A Lifelong Commitment
When seeking dental veneers in the Albuquerque area, seeking a skilled and experienced dentist can make all of the difference between okay results and a stunning, natural-looking smile. You should also find a dentist who welcomes your questions, especially when making a permanent change to your smile.
Porcelain veneers are one of those big decisions that are permanent and should be considered carefully. To make veneers look natural and fit properly, polishing the surfaces of your natural teeth is necessary, which means they are a lifelong commitment.
That being said, most of our patients who choose veneers wish they had done it sooner. With the proper care and some common sense caution, your veneers will last many years – even decades.
Protect Your Veneers
Avoid biting into anything other than food, including fingernails. Hard substances can crack or even cause veneers to detach from teeth. We can replace your veneers should they become damaged, but protecting them is much easier and less costly.
It is also important to keep your regular dental appointments with your Albuquerque dentist and stay on track with your dental cleanings and exams. While veneers will not decay, the supporting tooth structure could, and gum health is always essential to protecting any smile.
There Are Cosmetic Options for You
If you are like many other of our Albuquerque, NM patients who have sustained damage to their natural teeth, you may be wondering what cosmetic treatment options are available to you. One of the more popular cosmetic dental treatments available is porcelain veneers.
What Are Veneers?
Veneers are thin, tooth-colored shells that fit over the front of an existing tooth to help improve the appearance of one or more teeth in your mouth. Veneers are able to treat multiple cosmetic concerns, as they can change the color, shape, and alignment of your teeth. Porcelain veneers have an advantage over some other options as they allow you to treat anywhere from a single tooth to a portion of your mouth to your entire smile.
Porcelain veneers are a big commitment, as they are permanent and the procedure is irreversible. Because the shell material sits on top of an existing tooth, the tooth must be filed down to allow room for the veneer. Before committing to veneers, it is important for patients to understand that this treatment option remains with them for the rest of their lives.
Contact Us
Dr. Essenmacher and the rest of our dedicated team at Essenmacher Family Dental are highly-skilled and have extensive experience placing porcelain veneers. Visit our Albuquerque office today to get started on a treatment plan that is designed specifically for you!
There Are Options For You
Chances are that if you are interested in teeth veneers, you have had some damage to your natural teeth that led you to this decision. Many of the patients who come to our Albuquerque dental office wanting veneers have dealt with a chronic tooth grinding habit that resulted in shortened and worn-down looking teeth.
One of the risks of having veneers while managing bruxism (teeth grinding) habit is preventing the same level of damage to your dentistry that occurred on the natural teeth. In most cases, we recommend that patients wear an upper or lower nightguard to protect teeth during sleep.
Nightguards Protect Veneers
Custom nightguards require impressions and a fitting appointment. Occasional adjustments to the surface of the nightguard will help keep the bite balanced and support relaxed jaw muscles. Teeth grinding patterns will wear down the surface of the nightguard, and for it to continue protecting your veneers, we recommend bringing it to each of your six-month appointments.
If you want veneers and live in the Albuquerque area, contact Essenmacher Family Dental to book a consultation with our cosmetic dentist, Dr. Lindsay Essenmacher. We welcome new patients and look forward to providing you with a solution to have the smile you want and deserve.
Consult With Your Doctor Before Teeth Whitening
Patients with generally good oral health should not have problems when choosing teeth whitening in our Albuquerque dental office. To make sure that your mouth is healthy enough for teeth bleaching, Dr. Lindsay Essenmacher will have a look at your next exam or pre-whitening visit.
Teeth whitening works by bleaching away stains that have collected on the teeth because of coffee, red wine, or tobacco use. Using peroxide, teeth whitening gel penetrates the teeth to whiten stains and give your teeth a brighter appearance. We provide custom whitening trays for the best results.
Some Patients May Experience Sensitivity
In some cases, patients with worn teeth or gum recession might find that their teeth feel sensitive after using teeth whitening agents. We encourage you to follow directions precisely and to use only a small amount of gel per tooth. If you still feel sensitive, you can take a day off between treatments or reduce the amount of time you keep your trays in your mouth. We also offer desensitizing treatments.
The best time to have your teeth whitened is following a professional dental cleaning in our Albuquerque dental office. If it’s time for your next cleaning or you want to learn more about having whiter teeth, give us a call!
If you are thinking of improving your smile with cosmetic dentistry, you have probably come across some information about porcelain veneers while researching beautiful smiles. Porcelain veneers are thin, tooth-colored restorations that fit over the front of your natural teeth. We offer dental veneers in our Albuquerque dental office to provide patients with uniform smiles that look natural – only better.
One of the most appreciated aspects of dental veneers is that they improve many cosmetic concerns with a single procedure.
- The appearance of misalignment
- Gaps or spaces between teeth
- Discoloration
- Chipped or worn down teeth
- Lack of uniformity
Dental veneers can replace a single out of place tooth or a full arch for a brand new look. It all depends on your goals for your smile. Dr. Lindsay Essenmacher combines the science of dentistry with the art of cosmetics for beautiful, natural-looking results that give our patients their dream smiles.
Planning is one of the most critical aspects of restorative dentistry. You will always achieve better results if your teeth and gums are in great shape. After a full exam, Dr. Essenmacher will evaluate your bite and present treatment options to give you a radiant smile.
If you feel that veneers might be the choice for you, contact our Albuquerque dental office to set up your next dental appointment.

Options for Your Dream Smile
In the dental field, we often use the term “cosmetic dentistry” in our everyday conversations. Many people, however, do not actually know what cosmetic dentistry is or what services it includes. At Essenmacher Family Dental, we strive to ensure our patients are fully informed before making important decisions about their smiles.
Cosmetic dentistry is a phrase used to describe the branch or area of dentistry that primarily focuses on improving the overall appearance of the smile. This is in contrast to restorative dentistry or general dentistry, which focus more broadly on the functionality and preservation of teeth.
Cosmetic procedures are so popular because many people are unhappy with the size, shape, color or alignment of their natural teeth and want to improve one or more aspects of their smile. Common cosmetic dental procedures include teeth whitening, veneers, and dental implants.

Not every cosmetic dental procedure is right for every patient, and it can be overwhelming to choose from so many different options. At Essenmacher Family Dental, we will work with you to help create a treatment plan that is personalized exactly to your smile’s unique needs. Painless Teeth-Whitening
Internal bleaching is a painless method of whitening that is typically used on a front tooth that has become discolored, usually following root canal treatment or trauma. To improve the color of the tooth, Dr. Essenmacher places a bleaching agent inside the tooth and then covers it with a temporary filling. The gel is left in the tooth for a few days, and then the shade is checked to see if the tooth has returned to the proper shade. If so, the temporary filling and bleaching agent are removed and replaced with a permanent filling. If either the patient or the Doctor isn’t happy with the shade, another round of bleaching would be completed. To see examples of internal bleaching, check out our Smile Gallery! If you have a discolored tooth that you are interested in having evaluated for internal bleaching, give our office a call. We would be happy to see you for a complimentary consultation.
Some patients do experience sensitivity after whitening their teeth. The good news is that it is only temporary and will subside within a few days after treatment. At Essenmacher Family Dental, we have products that can help to decrease the sensitivity – a prescription strength fluoride toothpaste that can be used immediately after whitening or a professional fluoride varnish that we apply to the teeth.
Crowns and Bridges
How Is That Possible?
Many people are puzzled when their dentist tells them that their tooth with a crown has a cavity. You may be thinking, “How does that happen? I thought the crown was porcelain or metal, and covers the whole tooth?”
Typically crowned teeth develop a cavity on the tooth at the junction where the crown and tooth meet, which dentists call the “margin.” The margin is sometimes on the root surface of your tooth, which is more susceptible to getting cavities.
Cavity Prevention is Important
This is why oral hygiene is very important in making your crowns last longer. Brushing twice a day and flossing to remove plaque buildup helps to prevent cavities. Some other things that can be done to prevent from getting cavities on crowned teeth are in-office fluoride treatments after your cleanings, a healthy diet, and using a prescription mouth rinse or toothpaste. Please call Essenmacher Family Dental if you have any further questions.
If you have missing or damaged teeth, these issues can lead to further tooth loss because of wear, erosion, bone loss, and shifting.
Also, damaged and missing teeth may impact your self-esteem, prevent you from smiling, and even limit your dietary choices.
At Essenmacher Family Dental our Northeast Heights area dentist creates beautiful crowns and bridges to help you reclaim your emotional wellness and to protect you from further tooth loss.
A dental crown alone is often used to strengthen a weak or damaged tooth. This may follow a failed root canal or result from trauma or decay.
A dental crown also hides stains, cracks, and specific tooth flaws that can take away from your smile.
A bridge holds natural-looking replacement teeth suspended between two dental crowns. These crowns are placed over the teeth on either side of the gap to give you a full smile.
Crowns and bridges in Albuquerque, NM are designed to match your teeth and fill in your smile. We think you will love your new look following crowns and bridges.

Teens and young adults should undergo a wisdom teeth evaluation to determine the presence of wisdom teeth, how they are developing, and if they will create pain or bite-related problems.
Because wisdom teeth, also called third molars, are so far back in the mouth, they can pose oral health challenges.
- Infection
- Gum disease
- Decay
- Pain
Our jaws have developed with the modern diet, and many patients do not have enough space in their jaws for wisdom teeth to erupt straight and aligned. Often, they will put pressure on adjacent teeth, which can cause pain or overcrowding. Sometimes wisdom teeth cannot emerge through the gums and remain impacted, which requires an extraction.
It is for these reasons that most dentists recommend having wisdom teeth removed. It is often best to have this done before they begin to put pressure on nearby teeth of shift the bite.
Comfortable, Easy Extractions
We provide comfortable dental extractions in our Albuquerque dental office, and for patients with complex extractions, we work with a number of skilled oral surgeons in our area.
If you have questions about wisdom teeth and live in the Albuquerque of Northeast Heights areas, contact Essenmacher Family Dental to schedule an evaluation with Dr. Lindsay Essenmacher.
At Essenmacher Family Dental, we set aside time to treat dental emergencies. And we always do our best to see patients quickly.
During this crucial time, which can be scary, we want to relieve your pain and save your tooth or teeth.
However, if you’ve experienced a trauma, we want you to visit your local emergency room first. You or a friend can contact us from there.
Otherwise, we treat your dental emergency with diligence.
What our Northeast Heights emergency dentist decides to do during your emergency, however, will always depend on the nature of your emergency.
For example, some emergencies require x-rays. Others require trying to save a lost tooth.

At Essenmacher Family Dental, most of the emergencies we encounter have to do with the sudden pain brought by dental infections.
The best way to avoid dental infections is to brush and floss daily. Additionally, it’s crucial to your long-term dental health to see our dentist regularly and schedule a professional dental cleaning at least every six months.
Our patients who practice these healthy habits have fewer dental emergencies, cavities, infections, and a decreased risk for periodontal disease.
Contact Our Dental Office

If You’re Experiencing Pain, See A Doctor
If you’re experiencing pain on a tooth when biting down, or with temperature- usually hot, or with no stimulus at all, it’s best to have the tooth examined. We want you out of pain so scheduling toothaches is a priority – usually the same day. At your visit we will take x-rays and examine the area. A root canal treatment, or endodontic therapy, is needed when the tooth nerve is infected and inflamed. This can happen if the tooth is injured, cracked, broken or decay (cavity) has reached the nerve. A root canal treatment involves removing the nerve and then sealing the canal to protect the tooth from further damage. A crown may be needed after the root canal to protect the integrity of the remaining tooth structure.
Here For Your Emergencies

If you lost part of your tooth due to biting too hard or other trauma or impact, call our office.

Dental Implant Restoration
Dental Implants Can Last a Lifetime
Most dentists consider dental implants the most permanent solution to missing teeth. The dental implant post, which fuses with the jawbone, becomes a permanent fixture in a process called osseointegration. Barring any periodontal disease or bone loss, your dental implant post can last a lifetime!
Dental implant crowns can break down over time from the forces of chewing, teeth grinding, or trauma. In most cases, the dental implant crown can be replaced in our Albuquerque dental office, adding years to the life of your dental implant.
Proper Care is Important
Of course, as with all dentistry, taking care of your dental implant is essential. Fortunately, single dental implants require only regular home hygiene and professional dental cleanings. You can brush and floss them normally. At each dental appointment, Dr. Essenmacher will check the dental implant to ensure it is still functioning properly and the surrounding gum tissue looks healthy.
If you have missing teeth and need a solution to complete your smile, we offer dental implant restoration, dental bridges, dentures, and All-on-4 dental implant dentures to help people in Albuquerque and Northeast Heights enjoy the foods they love and smile with confidence.
Give us a call to book an appointment today and discover the solution that will work best for your smile.
If you have missing teeth, you have probably discovered the modern, tooth-replacement option called dental implants. Because they replace the entire tooth, including the root, dental implants are stable and long-lasting with the proper care. Their benefits are the reason that so many people are seeking dental implants as a solution to missing teeth.
An exam with your Northern Heights dentist will help you decide if dental implants are right for you.
Here are some factors that can determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants.
- You have enough healthy bone.
- You are committed to good oral hygiene care.
- You keep your professional dental cleaning and exam appointments.
- You have healthy gums.
Evaluation of your bone, teeth, gums, and goals for your smile will help Dr. Lindsay Essenmacher ensure that your dental implant treatment is a success. Certain medication and smoking might make dental veneers riskier. We can discuss each of your tooth-replacement options and help you make a choice that works best for you.
For patients seeking an alternative to dental implant treatment, we also offer fixed dental bridges, partial dentures, full dentures, and implant dentures.
Contact our Northern Heights dental office for a dental implant evaluation.
If you have a missing tooth or teeth, dental implant restorations in Northeast Heights, NM are the best way to replace those teeth. Dental implants are considered the most natural alternative to the teeth you were born with.
Dental implants start with a thin titanium post implanted in your jaw. Our top Northeast Heights, NM dentist completes this procedure with a life-like restoration tooth. She uses quality materials to give you a beautiful restoration that blends in naturally with your existing teeth.
The good news about dental implants is that they require no special maintenance. You treat the post and restoration the same as you would a natural tooth.
This means brushing and flossing regularly and visiting our Albuquerque, NM dental office for exams and twice-yearly cleanings.
Your post and restoration cannot decay, but you are still vulnerable to gum disease or gum infections that can cause you to lose your implant post and your restoration tooth.
Our Northeast Heights area dentist will provide all follow-up instructions after you’ve received your restoration tooth. And you can contact our dental office if you have any questions.

A Long-Term Solution For Missing Teeth
The procedure for dental implants is not instant, but our patients are always thrilled with their results, making it worth the wait. One of the main reasons we recommend dental implants in our Albuquerque dental office is because they are a long-term and permanent solution to the problem of missing teeth. Dental implants are almost like having your natural tooth again!
Dental implant procedures are relatively quick. Precise planning for the surgery will help Dr. Essenmacher identify the ideal location for the oral surgeon to place dental implants, and the surgery itself takes only about an hour to ninety minutes.
Patients report little discomfort during and after implant surgery. The longest part of the dental implant process is waiting for your implants to fuse with your natural bone over the course of 3-6 months. Implants, made of biocompatible titanium, will actually integrate with your natural bone, giving them a stable and permanent foundation.

Once the implants healing process is complete, Dr. Essenmacher will place a custom porcelain dental crown atop the dental implant post, completing your smile and improving dietary choices.

If you’re considering dental restorations to restore your smile, the team at Essenmacher Family Dental is here to support you.
Our skilled Albuquerque, NM dentist knows from experience that dental restorations do more than provide beautiful smiles. Dental restorations also contribute to your oral health.
Dental restorations provide the following oral health benefits:
- Dental implants help prevent bone loss in your jaw, which can give your face a sunken appearance.
- Dental restorations help prevent existing teeth from shifting.
- Dental restorations improve your bite and save wear on other teeth.
A Fixed Dental Bridge
A fixed dental bridge is anchored between two adjacent teeth by use of crowns and abutments. The adjacent teeth support your restoration tooth, which is colored and shaped to match your smile.
Our top Albuquerque, NM dentist relies on CEREC technology to create your crown from a single piece of porcelain.
Dental Implants
Dental implants provide a more permanent solution to tooth loss because titanium posts are implanted in your jaw. These posts are sturdy enough—only a few strategically placed—to support an entire arch of restoration teeth.
Dental implant posts take several months to fuse with your jawbone, but when the bonding is complete, our cosmetic dentist places your restoration!

Partial and Complete Dentures
Dentures Need To Be Replaced Every Five to Eight Years
Ill-fitting dentures may cause painful sores and move about inside the mouth when you speak, chew, or yawn. A common misconception is that if you keep them clean, dentures should last forever. What many people don’t realize is that because your bone changes over time, dentures need to be replaced every five to eight years.
Without teeth, the bony ridge that normally supports them will begin to fade away. Since dentures use this bone beneath the gums for support, dentures can become loose as the bone reabsorbs into the body. When caring for dentures in our Albuquerque dental office, we can provide relines – either chairside or by sending them to the lab – to improve fit.
We Create Dentures for All People
Eventually, however, you will require a new set of dentures. Dr. Lindsay Essenmacher creates all kinds of dentures from partials, complete dentures, and All-on-4 implant-retained dentures.
If you are fearful of full-mouth extractions, Dr. Essenmacher offers immediate dentures in our Albuquerque dental office, so you leave the dental office with teeth on the same day.
If you want a solution for missing teeth, contact us to book an appointment. There is no reason to let loose or old dentures have a negative impact on your quality of life.
At Essenmacher Family Dental, we offer natural-looking dentures made from quality materials. We also adjust your dentures before you leave our office to make sure they fit comfortably.
Our Albuquerque and Northeast Heights patients love our dentures and partial dentures, and with proper care, dentures can last for a long time. However, there are signs that it’s time to replace your old dentures with a new set.
Denture Slippage
Your denture should stay in place, and you should not have to apply adhesive several times per day. If you find this happening, it’s a sign of natural bone loss and a strong indication that it’s time to replace your denture.
Denture Cracks
A small crack in your denture plate can escalate quickly and become a full break during the worst possible time.
Nicks and cracks are signs of wear and tear, which means you should think about denture replacement.
A More Permanent Denture
Many patients in the Albuquerque, NM and Northeast Heights areas change their dentures simply because they want a better quality plate or an affixed solution.
At Essenmacher Family Dental, we offer attached dentures and partial dentures, including All-On-4. This means your new denture is permanently affixed to your jaw with four small but sturdy implant posts per plate.
With All-On-4, you don’t have to worry about denture adhesives or dental realignments.

Gum disease and unpleasant odors can develop if you do not care for your dentures properly. Following a few simple steps can keep your denture functioning optimally for five to seven years. It is best to maintain regular dental appointments with Dr. Lindsay Essenmacher in her Albuquerque dental office to examine the state of the denture and to monitor your oral health.
Proper Denture Care:
- Rinse dentures and your mouth after eating.
- Keep dentures out of the reach of children and pets.
- Handle dentures carefully to avoid dropping them.
- Brush your dentures daily using a soft denture brush.
- Use only denture-specific cleansers.
- Soak or store dentures in a moist container overnight.
- Contact your dentist if your dentures become damaged.
- Book an appointment if your dentures become loose.
- Soak dentures in white vinegar if they collect tartar.
Things to avoid when you have dentures:
- Avoid hot water and leaving your denture in a hot car.
- Don’t use abrasive cleaners or whitening toothpaste.
- Never use bleach-containing products.
If you have ill-fitting dentures, loose dentures, or you think you might benefit from a new set of dentures, contact our Albuquerque dental office to book an exam with Dr. Essenmacher.
While moving and shifting dentures are a common complaint among edentulous patients (those missing all of their teeth), traditional dentures do little to help patients who have trouble with keeping them in place because the dentures are older and need to replacing or because bone loss makes fitting dentures difficult.
We offer a solution using All-on-4 in our Albuquerque dental office to firmly anchor dentures for added stability.
How All-on-4 Works
Using four strategically placed dental implants, Dr. Lindsay Essenmacher can create an anchor to which dentures can attach. Since the implants are secured in bone, dentures will not move or shift when speaking, laughing, or eating.
All-on-4 requires precise planning.
- Locate areas of adequate bone
- Plan dental implant surgery for placement
- Surgically place dental implants into the jawbone
- Allow adequate time for the bone and implant to fuse
- Create custom dentures that look amazing and natural
- Fit dentures with the dental implants
- Enjoy more foods you love and improved confidence
If you have ill-fitting dentures or want to know your options when it comes to innovative All-on-4 dentures, contact our Albuquerque dental practice to arrange a consultation and evaluation. Dr. Essenmacher will help you regain your confidence with a teeth replacement option that works best for you.
At Essenmacher Family Dental, we’re excited about All-on-4. This groundbreaking procedure provides full mouth restoration using only eight tiny implant posts! Our Albuquerque and Northeast Heights patients loved their new smiles following All-on-4.
Natural-Looking Tooth Replacement
These small but sturdy posts are strategically placed—four in the upper jaw and four in the lower jaw—to hold two arches of life-like replacement teeth. The results are so natural looking that no one will know you’ve had work done. They will simply see that you have a great smile.
Because our implant posts are small but sturdy, we consider All-on-4 to be minimally invasive. Yes, you may experience some tenderness for a few days following implant placement, but the discomfort is mild and comparable to most standard dental procedures.
During implant placement, you will also be relaxed, and your mouth will be thoroughly numb.

You might have heard terms like implant-retained dentures or implant-supported dentures. We offer implant dentures in our Albuquerque dental office to improve the fit and function of dentures for our patients. Having dentures that fit well and feel comfortable can improve patients’ nutritional choices and self-esteem, opening the door to having a happy social life without worry of embarrassing denture mishaps like falling or shifting.
At Essenmacher Family Dental, we offer All-on-4 dentures for our Albuquerque dental patients. All-on-4 requires only four dental implants to secure an entire arch of denture teeth. All-on-4 has a number of advantages over traditional dentures retained by dental implants.
A Smaller Profile
Rather than covering the entire palate, All-on-4 allows us to provide stability through anchor implants, reducing the size and shape of the denture. Patients can taste their food better and find them easier to get used to.
Fewer Procedures
Your dentist will choose the ideal location for the dental implants, often being able to avoid additional bone grafting procedures.
A Permanent Solution
Your new All-on-4 dentures are a long-term solution to missing teeth. Because they are not as affected by changes in bone structure, you can enjoy more extended results than the traditional five to seven years of complete dentures.
Contact our Albuquerque dental office to learn more about dentures, including our innovative All-on-4 treatment option.
Get Your Smile Back
If you have missing teeth and are looking for answers in the Northeast Heights area, you will be happy to know that Dr. Lindsay Essenmacher offers a variety of smile-saving solutions to give you your smile back, including All-on-4.
Dental implants are fast becoming the most popular way to replace missing teeth because they are stable, long-lasting, and reliable. For patients missing all of the teeth on their upper or lower arch, replacing every missing tooth with a dental implant can seem daunting.
Get Stability and Comfort
An innovative procedure called All-on-4 provides the stability of dental implants using just four strategically placed implant posts to secure a full arch of teeth in place. Rather than a complete denture, All-on-4 is a minimal profile prosthetic that makes it possible for patients to have full-arch teeth replacement without acrylic covering the entire upper palate.
Another benefit of All-on-4 implants is that it is possible to avoid bone grafting by choosing a bone-dense location and tilting the dental implants to secure them in the most stable part of the jaw.
If you are looking to replace missing teeth or want an alternative to traditional dentures, contact our Northeast Heights dental office to learn more about All-on-4 and other tooth-replacement options that lead to greater freedom and an improved quality of life. At Essenmacher Family Dental, we are dedicated to providing solutions that help you have the smile you deserve.
Modern Dentures Look Natural and Feel Comfortable
If you have visions of boxy, too-white denture teeth, you probably had parents or grandparents with dentures. Old-fashioned dentures seemed to spend more time swimming in a glass of water near the bathroom sink or bed instead of in their owners’ mouths.
You will be relieved to know that modern denture technology has come a long way since even a generation ago. Today’s dentures feel lighter, look more natural, and offer a wide range of denture teeth to match various facial shapes and sizes. Simply put, when you opt for dentures in our Albuquerque, NM dental office, they will never look too big or false.
We Create a Treatment Plan for You
We will spend time discussing your goals for your smile. So many options exist today, including implant-retained dentures and partial dentures in lightweight, metal-free options. An exam and consultation with Dr. Lindsay Essenmacher will help you achieve your goals for your smile while replacing missing teeth that can make eating and speaking comfortably more difficult.
Tooth loss doesn’t mean the end of a beautiful smile. With modern dentures, you can have your smile back. Give Essenmacher Family Dental a call. We are located in Albuquerque, NM and always accepting new smiles into our practice.
Periodontal Treatment
Dry Mouth Affects Many People
Having a dry mouth can lead to bad breath, periodontal disease, and an increased incidence of tooth decay. Periodontal disease not only puts your teeth at risk, but also your overall health and increases your risk of systemic illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Bleeding gums, recession, and soreness are all symptoms of periodontal disease.
Dry mouth is a common problem for many individuals, especially those who are older or take daily medications. Cancer treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy also cause dry mouth.
There Are Products for Your Dry Mouth
There are several products on the market designed especially for individuals with dry mouth. Rinses and certain types of chewing gum can help you create more saliva. More frequent dental cleanings and antibiotic rinses can help reduce bacterial growth and infection.
Home strategies can be helpful. If you smoke, you are at a higher risk for dry mouth. Staying hydrated with ample amounts of water is also important, especially in dry, sunny climates, like Albuquerque, where it is easier to become dehydrated.

If you suffer from dry mouth, talk to Dr. Essenmacher and she will be happy to discuss options with you that can help you maintain your oral health.
Gum Disease is Very Common
Periodontal disease is a very common disease affecting roughly 50% of American adults. Gum disease is an infection in your gums. Researchers have linked periodontal disease to other conditions such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and low birth-weight babies.
Gum disease can also cause pain, gum and tooth sensitivity, and bad breath.
Periodontal infections can be brought on or worsened by several factors including virulent oral bacteria, diabetes mellitus, smoking, inadequate home care, crowded or misaligned teeth, certain medications, poor diet, and mouth breathing.
Treating Periodontal Disease Comprehensively
At Essenmacher Family Dental, we treat periodontal disease with a comprehensive approach.
First, we determine the health of your gums with a periodontal oral evaluation. If you have gum disease, we will recommend a professional dental cleaning that meets your needs. Our dental cleanings are always customized to the health of our patients, taking your needs into account. That may mean that you have a deep cleaning, followed by regular oral hygiene maintenance appointments until we gain control over your infection.
We work together with our patients to come up with a plan that can help you stay on track, keep your teeth, and protect your overall health. To find out how to address your condition, contact our Albuquerque dental office for an appointment with Dr. Essenmacher. We look forward to helping you achieve maximum oral health.
Bad breath can certainly disrupt your daily life and cause you to feel self-conscious when speaking to others. The best way to find out what is happening with your oral health is to book an appointment with your Albuquerque dentist to get to the bottom of the matter.
At Essenmacher Family Dental, we help patients achieve excellent oral health and fresh breath with a comprehensive dental hygiene plan. In the meantime, here are a few common causes of bad breath, also known as halitosis.
#1 Periodontal (Gum) Disease
Gum disease is the most common cause of bad breath. Bacteria reproduce creating a foul odor. By cleaning tartar and sticky plaque from the surfaces of the teeth, healing can begin. Our hygienists are experienced, gentle, and will organize a personal treatment plan just for you.
#2 Dehydration
Not drinking enough water can reduce saliva production. Saliva is the mouth’s natural cleaning mechanism. Be sure to sip water frequently throughout the day and drink plenty first thing in the morning. Your body might become dehydrated during sleep.
#3 Gastrointestinal Issues
Digestive issues can cause bad breath. By ruling out any oral conditions, we can help you discover if a trip to your medical practitioner could benefit you.
For more information about bad breath from a top Northeast Heights dentist, contact us to book an appointment with Dr. Lindsay Essenmacher.
If your gums appear to be pulling away from your teeth and exposing the darker roots, you might be experiencing gum recession.
Gum recession is fairly common, but should not be ignored. If you have ever heard the term “long in the tooth,” it is because gums tend to recede as we age, and it is synonymous with being older. In reality, gums can recede at any age, and if you have noticed changes to your gums, it’s time to book a dental exam in our Albuquerque dental office. Gum recession can develop for a number of reasons:
Misaligned Teeth
Teeth that are crooked and do not come together correctly when you bite down can cause uneven force around the mouth, which can cause gums to recede in specific areas in addition to causing chipped or broken teeth.
Gum Disease
Periodontal (gum) disease leads to recession in some cases. If you notice painful or burning gums, or if your gums bleed when you clean your teeth, Dr. Lindsay Essenmacher and our hygiene team can help get your oral health back on track.
Brushing Too Hard
The tips of your toothbrush bristles do the cleaning and are effective at removing plaque and food particles. Too much pressure can damage delicate gum tissue, especially when gum disease is already present. Brush thoroughly without pressing too hard. If your toothbrush bristles look frayed, you are brushing too hard.
To book an appointment for an evaluation of your gums, contact our Albuquerque dental office. We welcome new patients.
Root Canal Treatment
Gentle Root Canal Treatment
Root canal therapy becomes necessary when the internal tissue of a tooth, or the tissue surrounding the root tip, becomes infected. Infections cause swelling, which can become quite painful, especially when it involves the nerve. Rather than extracting a tooth, we provide gentle root canal treatment in our Albuquerque dental office.
Part of the process involved in root canal treatment is to remove the nerve and blood supply from the tooth canals. Because the tooth structure is intact, but without a blood supply, the tooth can become brittle.
If the tooth is out of occlusion (the bite) and is not subjected to the pressure caused by chewing, a filling may be enough to protect a root canal-treated tooth. In other cases, however, including root canal treatment on a posterior (back) tooth, a dental crown will offer more stability and longevity for your tooth.
Protect Your Root Canal Tooth
In many cases, Dr. Lindsay Essenmacher designs tooth-colored dental crowns in our Albuquerque dental office to protect root canal teeth.
By following through with complete restorative treatment on a troubled tooth, you can prolong the life of your tooth by years – even decades. Saving natural teeth is often the most conservative approach to dentistry. Don’t be discouraged if you need a root canal! It is a tooth-saving procedure that can protect your smile.
Infection Needs to Be Treated
A root canal refers to the innermost part of the tooth. As with any part of the body, the root canal can develop an infection because of disease or trauma. Because the root canal houses the nerve fibers inside the tooth, the need for root canal treatment is often indicated first because of pain that tends to worsen over time.
We offer therapy for the root canals in our Albuquerque dental office with the intention of saving infected teeth from extraction and to relieve your dental pain.
When symptoms develop, you might first notice sensitivity that becomes a dull throbbing ache. Eventually, without dental treatment, the pain can become sharp, consistent, and all-consuming, which is why we recommend you contact Essenmacher Family Dental at the first sign of a change to your oral health.
Painless Root Canal Therapy
During root canal therapy, Dr. Lindsay Essenmacher will completely numb the area before removing the infection, bacteria, and diseased tissue. Most patients report immediate improvement, though it is common to have some residual sensitivity for a few days after your procedure.
We will discuss all of the details of root canal treatment and post-treatment instructions at your root canal exam in our Albuquerque dental office. If you feel anxiety, our caring team will put your mind at ease with their professional and compassionate approach to dentistry.
Root Canal Therapy
A common question we are asked by our Albuquerque patients is whether their root canal procedure will be painful. Root canal treatments have a reputation for being unpleasant and are even dreaded by many patients. What most people do not realize, however, is that root canal procedures in and of themselves should not typically be painful.
If you need a root canal procedure performed, it is because there is already an infection in your tooth. This infection leads to pain and causes the area to become inflamed and symptomatic. It is the infection within the tooth that is painful — not the root canal procedure used to clean and save that tooth. When properly performed, root canal procedures should not cause additional pain and will be no more uncomfortable than a traditional filling.
Recovery is Necessary
As with any dental procedure, your body will need time to heal and recover after the root canal treatment. Mild sensitivity and soreness in the area are to be expected in the days following your root canal.
At Essenmacher Family Dental, our goal is always to make you feel as safe and comfortable as possible during your treatment. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our caring Albuquerque, NM team today!

You May Be More Prone to Cavities Than Others
Cavities are caused by certain strains of bacteria that are more prevalent in certain people than in others. Bacteria feed on the food particles in your mouth and create an acidic environment that softens your protective enamel. Since we focus on prevention, we utilize the latest technology to help us prevent decay and protect your teeth.
We use a specialized meter that reads the ATP present in your mouth, which gives us a measurement of the amount of “bad” bacteria your mouth harbors. We then can recommend products to reduce the “bad” bacterial load based on your individual needs.
Daily Dental Hygiene Matters
Having good home care habits is important. Brushing twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush, flossing every day, and eating a healthy diet can all promote good oral health. You cannot do it alone, however! Even the best home care needs supplementation from a dental hygienist to remove the tartar and bacteria that brushing and flossing alone can not remove. Our gentle, professional, and friendly dental hygienists will tailor a personalized dental cleaning to help your smile look great and feel fresh!
Dental Sealants Are An Option
For patients who are more susceptible to decay, we provide dental sealants as a protective barrier between your chewing surface and the food and bacteria that cause damage. Sealants last up to five years and are cost effective as well as noninvasive.
Fluoride can strengthen your enamel. Regular fluoride treatments for patients who want to avoid cavities can provide added protection at a minimal cost. Fluoride is also helpful in reducing sensitivity for those patients who have gum recession.
There are many dental offices in the Northeast Heights area, and we know that choosing the right dentist for you and your family can feel overwhelming. We believe there are several important factors to consider and questions to ask yourself when selecting a dentist:
Will this dentist treat my entire family?
Not every dentist specializes in or even enjoys treating children, which can be very important to consider if you are searching for a practice that will take care of your entire family. If treatment for yourself and your children is top-priority, make sure to discuss this with any potential office.
Does this dentist have a specialty of any kind?
Many general dentists offer a range of services but specialize in a particular area, such as cosmetic or restorative dentistry. If your family is searching for a particular treatment such as implants or teeth whitening, considering a dentist’s preferred treatment areas can be helpful in making your decision.
How does the temperament of this dentist and their team fit in with my family?
While it may not seem like the most important qualification on paper, many patients report that temperament and personality are some of the most important aspects they consider when selecting a dentist. You and your treatment team will spend a lot of time together over the years, and your experience will be much more enjoyable if everyone gets along!

Healthy teeth for life starts with preventive dentistry, and professional teeth cleanings in our Albuquerque, NM dental office play a huge role.
Professional teeth cleanings help prevent:
- Cavities
- Dental infections
- Dental emergencies
- Periodontal disease
- Tooth loss
We have found that our Northeast Heights dental patients have fewer dental health issues when they follow guidelines put forward by the American Dental Association. The association recommends teeth cleanings at least every six months.
If you have gingivitis or periodontal disease, a more comprehensive dental cleaning is in order, and these cleanings may be scheduled more often.
With oral health, it is always better to prevent an issue than try to treat it!
Of course, we recommend brushing and flossing at least twice per day and avoiding sugar-rich snacks and beverages. However, even these steps are not enough and do not mean that you should forego a professional teeth cleaning.
Toothbrushes, pastes, and floss cannot clean hard-to-reach areas, and they cannot get rid of stubborn tartar and bacteria.
Our Albuquerque, NM hygienist utilizes all the latest technologies to help keep your teeth healthy for life! Our hygienist can also recommend preventative brushing and flossing strategies to help you get the most out of your oral health routine at home.

Why do teeth become sensitive?
Sensitivity comes from a number of conditions. Malocclusion (a bad bite), misaligned teeth, gum recession, and fractured teeth can all cause sensitivity. A clenching and grinding habit increases your risk of sensitivity. Extreme sensitivity to hot and cold can also indicate the need for a root canal.
Using teeth whitening products and abrasive whitening toothpastes creates sensitivity in some people. Taking a break from these products can resolve your condition.
What can I do about sensitive teeth?
Sensitivity is a common problem among individuals of all ages. There are specialized sensitivity toothpastes you can use at home, or Dr. Essenmacher can also utilize in-office desensitizers to make you more comfortable.
Fluoride treatments can strengthen enamel and reduce sensitivity, especially when used consistently. A nightguard can protect your teeth from a nocturnal clenching and grinding habit and provide a barrier between your upper and lower teeth that may help you prevent fractures.
Lifestyle habits such as avoiding excessively cold drinks can help to reduce acute sensitivity. And to avoid fracturing a tooth, you should never chew ice, whether you have sensitive teeth or not!
Talk to Dr. Essenmacher about your sensitivity and she can recommend the treatment that is right for you.
The More Information, The Better
Dental x-rays give us very important information that helps us evaluate your mouth for periodontal disease, decay between the teeth, certain types of tumors, and tooth infections (abscesses or cysts). We take only the necessary number of images to be able to effectively treat and diagnose oral conditions. Unless you encounter a problem or have a dental emergency, we take x-rays approximately once per year and a full mouth series of x-rays once every five years. Regular x-rays help us to compare changes in your health over time.
Many patients express concern over the radiation associated with dental x-rays. Dental x-rays have always been among the lowest in radiation. Our office only uses digital dental x-rays, which emit a significantly reduced amount of radiation compared to traditional dental films. Digital dental x-rays allow us to download an image of your teeth immediately so that Dr. Essenmacher can make a diagnosis on the spot if you have pain or a dental emergency. Digital x-rays are also better for the environment by eliminating the chemicals required to develop film. Because digital dental x-rays produce high-resolution images, Dr. Essenmacher can make a diagnosis while your condition is still small and treatable.
Not all conditions appear on dental x-rays, but they still afford us with the best method to see what is not visible with a visual exam alone.
